HOW DID I GET INTO SWIMMING?

The decision to become an open water swimmer and conquer the seven seas wasn’t made by me overnight. Like many other children, I simply started out looking for a sport that I enjoyed and tried out a few things – from ballet to athletics. Finally, at the age of five, I attended my first swimming class and knew immediately: this is it!

FROM SWIMMING TO OPEN WATER SWIMMING

At the age of 18, I rediscovered a book that had fascinated me as a child, and laid the foundation for my career as an open water swimmer: It was about an impressive athlete who had swum the English Channel as well as other open waters of the world. I realised that I wanted to do that too and focused my training on that goal from that moment on. Shortly after the change in training, I dared to make my first attempt in open water.

FIRST STEPS IN OPEN WATER SWIMMING

In June 2014, I took part in the Lake Constance Crossing which marked my debut in open water swimming and was a significant moment for me. I found a pace that I could maintain well over 12 kilometres and it worked: after 2.5 hours I arrived at the other end of Lake Constance and had reached the first milestone of my career as an open water swimmer.

THE THRILL OF OPEN WATER SWIMMING

In July 2018, I had another personal and sporting success by winning the legendary “20 Bridges Swim” in New York – the first German ever to do so!
Although I am proud of my achievements, I stay focused on the future with many more channels waiting for me.
